Travel to Norway with a foreign vehicle

Are you planning to use a foreign vehicle temporarily in Norway, for example, during your vacation? On this page, you will find information on what applies if you drive yourself or have the vehicle transported by a carrier.

If you drive to Norway

If you live abroad permanently and drive a vehicle into Norway for private use, you do not need to submit a declaration.

If the vehicle is transported by a carrier

If the vehicle is transported into Norway by a carrier – for example, a motorcycle sent ahead of the vacation – there are also exceptions from the declaration requirement, as long as:

  • The vehicle will be used temporarily (such as during a vacation)
  • The carrier can document this, and the vehicle is for private use

Documentation to be shown at border crossing

The carrier must stop at the Customs Office and inform them that the vehicle is being imported on behalf of the owner. Upon request, the following documentation must be shown:

  • Registration certificate and chassis number
  • Documentation of the owner's travel to Norway (for example, a plane ticket)
  • Rental or leasing contract (if applicable)
