If you want to import laser pointers with a strength in excess of 1 milliwatt (mW) to Norway, you must have a special permit from the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority.

Note: An update of this article is pending. Please note that some terms and/or references may differ from the Movement of Goods Act and the Customs Duty Act that enters into force from the 1st of January 2023.

The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority is responsible for the administration and supervision of all use of radiation sources, including laser pointers.

About laser pointers

Laser pointers are categorised as class 3R, 3B or 4. Class 3R has a maximum strength of 5mW. Class 3B has a maximum strength of 500mW, and laser class 4 are the laser pointers that have a strength in excess of 500mW.

Class 3B and 4 lasers shall have a visible and audible signal when they are on, and a device that stops the beam physically. An on/off button is not enough, you must actually be able to lock the laser pointer. The use of class 3B and 4 laser pointers requires eye protection, and are generally reserved for medicine, industry and research.
